Salt or no salt? Is salt really that bad for our health? For years we hear to reduce our salt intake for health reasons. They say a high-salt diet could cause high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease or even death. There is still a big debate over this topic. Some research shows salt is not that big enemy if you are consuming the right type.

Salt is a crystalline mineral made from sodium and chlorine, two elements which are essential for life. They contribute to multiple biological processes, including :

  • Helping the brain function
  • Aiding digestion and metabolism
  • Regulating the water that’s in and around your cells
  • Supporting adrenal function

Are you wondering why, if salt is necessary and have multiple benefits there is this big EVIL sign around it? Well, it is so important to see the difference between natural salt and the refined stuff we often eat.

There are many different varieties of salt on the market, different in texture, colour, taste and nutritional value. We gonna have a look at the most common and most used salts. Including refined table salt, sea salt and pink Himalayan salt.

Refined salt or table salt is originally produced from either salt mines evaporated sea water. We should stop here when you see the word refined on the label of any food it should ring a bell. Refined means it was processed, altered from its original state. In the case of refined salt, all the healing minerals were cleaned away. So all that’s left is 97,5% of sodium chloride and 2,5% of chemicals.

Consuming too much of this type of salt can lead to numerous health issues. Despite it, it’s the most commonly used type of salt. People use it to flavour their food, manufacturers use it in their packaged meal. It’s used to preserve food, so even if you think you don’t consume refined salt, you probably are.

Sea salt

If you ever had sea salt, then you know there is a big texture difference between sea salt and table salt. The salt flakes are bigger. Sea salt is made by evaporating sea water and usually contains some amount of traced minerals like potassium, zinc and iron. It is definitely a better choice than table salt, but still not the best due to the pollutants in our oceans. Since oceans have become a dumping ground for toxic poisons, sea salt can contain some of them.

Pink Himalayan salt

Pink salt from the mountains of Himalayas. It’s said to be the purest salt on earth because it’s not touched by toxins or pollutants from the modern world. It also had less sodium than table salt. 16% of Himalayan salt is naturally occurring minerals.

Doctors say regular consumption of pink salt can help balance the electrolytes, pH level and eliminate toxins. Aside from the benefits, the little amount has a strong taste, so little gets you a long way!

If you use salt a lot definitely say bye to table salt and do yourself better with at least sea salt. In the best case the Pink Himalayan salt! So don’t fear salt, just swap it for the healthy one!
